As per the Partner visa rules, if the applicant does not have a degree that was taught or researched in English, then the applicant is required to pass an English language test. (Partner includes Spouse, Civil Partner, Unmarried Partner, fiancé, fiancée or proposed civil partner)
Further, there are different English level assessments for the different stages of the application.
At the initial application, the applicant is required to pass the test at level A1, then for the extension of the Partner visa, the applicant is required to pass the test at level A2 and then again for the Indefinite leave to remain (ILR) application, the applicant is required to pass the test at level B1, summarised below:
Initial application - Level A1
Extension application - Level A2
ILR application - Level B1
Also, the test certificates are only valid for a period of 2 years from the date of the test. Each of these tests cost in the range of GBP 150 to GBP 200.
We have observed that almost 70% of the applicants have a higher proficiency in English than they are required to prove and are able to pass even the test at level B1 very easily.
Hence, if the applicant is confident enough that he/she can pass a B1 test even at the initial application, then they should do so and use it for the initial application and then they can use the same B1 test pass certificate for their Extension and ILR applications even after the certificate has expired. This will save them from the repeated costs of the tests and the hassle of studying for the English test again and again.
The important point to note is that they should have used it for the initial application whilst the certificate was valid and then they can use it for any subsequent UK Leave to remain applications.
Please note that the B1 test is just a 7 minute speaking and listening test. A simple search of the term "B1 English test" on Youtube will show some sample videos of test.
Also, there are several English test preparation centres, both within and outside the UK, who would prepare the Applicant for these tests, a simple search of "B1 English test preparation centres" on Google would enable the applicant to find an English test preparation centre.
