How to Fast-Track Your UK Citizenship: The New Nationality Priority Service Explained

Are you tired of waiting months to hear back about your UK citizenship application? For many, the long processing times can put life on hold—delaying new job opportunities, international travel, or important family plans.

The good news? The Home Office has officially introduced a Priority Service for nationality applications.

Here at Visa Solutions, we know how stressful the waiting game can be. To help you navigate this new option, we’ve broken down exactly how the priority service works, who qualifies, the costs involved, and what to do if your situation requires urgent attention.

What is the Nationality Priority Service?

Historically, citizenship and naturalisation applications were processed strictly in the order they were received, with very few exceptions. Now, applicants who want a faster decision—but don't necessarily meet the strict compassionate or emergency criteria—can opt into the new Priority Service.

By paying an additional fee of £500, you can move your application to the front of the queue.

How Long Does the Fast-Track Process Take?

If you submit your application through the priority service, you should generally expect to receive a decision within 30 working days from the date you submit your biometrics.

Important Limitations to Keep in Mind:

  • No Upgrades: You must select the priority option at the time of your application. If you have already submitted a standard citizenship application, you cannot upgrade it to a priority service later.

  • Complexity Delays: The 30-working-day timeframe is a target, not a guarantee. Your application might fall outside this window if it requires enhanced scrutiny, external checks, national security/identity enquiries, or is deemed particularly complex.

Visa Solutions Tip: To ensure you actually get your decision within those 30 days, make sure your application is meticulously prepared. Missing documents or errors are the most common reasons an application is flagged as "complex."

What if I Can't Pay, but Have an Emergency? (Standard Priority Criteria)

If you cannot afford the £500 fee or missed the chance to apply for the Priority Service, the Home Office does still grant a degree of priority treatment for certain exceptional circumstances. However, simply having an application that is over 12 months old is not enough to get priority if the delay is justifiable.

You may be considered for standard priority processing if you:

  • Have compelling or compassionate circumstances requiring urgent travel to the UK.

  • Cannot make necessary journeys for compassionate or business reasons using your existing documents.

  • Are approaching your 18th birthday and might miss the window to make the oath of allegiance and pledge as a minor.

  • Require British citizenship to accept a specific job offer.

  • Have been selected to represent the UK internationally in a sporting or cultural event (subject to confirming a sufficient calibre).

  • Have been significantly inconvenienced by a Home Office administrative error or delay.

  • Are the immediate family member of a civil servant who is posted, or soon to be posted, abroad.

If you are applying for the registration of a minor, their application will usually only be prioritized if it is not dependent on a parent's naturalisation outcome. If it is dependent, priority is only given in exceptional circumstances.
